“The Best Sommelier of Ukraine 2018”
On April 23, the final of the contest “The Best Sommelier of Ukraine 2018” (“The Beautiful Sommelier of Ukraine 2018”) was held in the conference hall of the Khreshchatyk Hotel (Kiev). According to the rules, three people take part in the final, but the third result with the same sum of points was also held by three people: Maxim Palukh, Roman Remeyev and Olga Kovalenko. Therefore, the final began with an additional test – a blind test of five samples of wines. According to its results, Olga Kovalenko reached the final. Thus, for the first time in the history of the competition (and it is being held for the 16th time), two women took part in the final. Further competition went on. The participants were supposed to temporarily submit sparkling wine, quiet red with decantation, find errors in the wine list, give characteristics to the samples in the blind test of wine and strong alcohol. New was the stage at which only whiskey was served and it was necessary to determine its age. The tasting of cheeses closed the individual competitions, and in the final test all the finalists had to spread an evenly divided bottle of sparkling wine into eight glasses. It was impossible to return. Olga Kovalenko took the third place, Marina Revkova took the second place, and Alexander Meer won the title “Best Sommelier of Ukraine 2018”. The competition is held by the Association of Sommeliers of Ukraine, which is a member of the International Association of Sommeliers (Association de la Sommellerie Internationale, ASI).
